sga is currently (in my eyes) having the second greatest guard peak ever. he’s by far the best scorer in basketball, has taken a genuine leap as a playmaker into borderline elite tier, is one of the best shot blocking guards ever (outside of like dwhite, dwade, and jordan), and is the most consistent player in the world.
the hatred toward him stemming from FTs is so incredibly dumb. worst part is, it started as a joke on twitter and then the dummies at espn took it as fact and started pushing it as such.
long story short, i’m very impressed with sga. he’s awesome. he makes me proud to root for a fellow countryman, and i wish him all the success in the world (up until the wcf when my spurs beat his thunder). i have little doubt that some uncomfortable convos will be had this summer regarding his all-time ranking.
Yeah I know we should try to appreciate these players while they're still hooping at a high level. It's like, one part of me understands that and is frustrated by how negative the discourse is around the NBA (I remember last year before the playoffs I was an SGA defender).
But then, there's a part of me that just wants to hate on all these players (SGA, Jokic, Luka, Giannis). I think it was watching the finals, and rooting for the Pacers that really made me hate SGA. It was only then that I realized how annoying his foul baiting really is when you're rooting against him. And Dort is dirty asf.
I'm sure in 10 years, I'll be waxing poetic about how talented he was and how much better 2020s ball was than 2030s ball, but right now I just can't bring myself to support him. The only MVP level player I don't hate right now is Wemby, and I'm sure that'll change when he starts winning MVP's and championships.
It's just the way it is, a big part of NBA culture is hating on the stars that are dominating the league.
this was a very well-writen piece.
